Conductor Nicholas McGegan opens the Discoveries season with Richard Strauss’ luscious Serenade, featuring 13 of Sarasota Orchestra’s wind and horn players. The strings have their turn to shine in Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, composed in 1905 to show off the string section of the London Symphony Orchestra. The program culminates with the full orchestra performing Haydn’s final and perhaps best-known London Symphony. It is an incredible fusion of his signature wit and humor with an awe-inspiring grandeur.

Cheers to the Music of Dance

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season with this celebration of dance music. Gluck’s gentle Dance of the Blessed Spirits, Poulenc’s elegant and witty Sinfonietta, and Brahms’ instantly recognizable Hungarian Dance will have you swaying in your seat, while Johann Strauss, Jr.’s waltzes will transport you to a Viennese New Year’s ball. Yue Bao, one of the new generation of women conductors making their presence felt, leads an orchestral concert that keeps your toes tapping the whole way through.

Becoming Tchaikovsky

What would have been on Tchaikovsky’s playlist? Conductor David Alan Miller takes you on a tour of Tchaikovsky’s musical heroes with beloved pieces by Bizet, Grieg, Schumann, and Mozart. The program also includes contemporary composer Missy Mazzoli’s These Worlds in Us, which beautifully sums up the duality of Tchaikovsky’s music, simultaneously evoking joy and heartache. Virtuoso cellist Zlatomir Fung adds flourish and flair to the program with Tchaikovsky’s timeless Rococo Variations–a glorious glimpse into the soul of one of music’s most treasured composers.
